Psalm 62:5-8

“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.” David is not speaking from a place where life has become simple. Psalm 62 carries the weight of opposition, instability, and human pressure. Men are described earlier in the psalm as leaning walls and tottering fences. Words are unreliable. Power is uncertain. Safety feels fragile. Yet in the middle of that tension, David turns inward and speaks to his own soul.

This is not denial. It is faith addressing fear with the truth of God. David does not pretend that waiting is easy. He does not tell his soul to feel differently because circumstances have improved. He tells his soul where to wait. “For God alone.” Not God as one refuge among many. Not God as the final option after every other support has been tested. God alone is the ground beneath his hope.

There is a quiet honesty in that word “alone.” It exposes how often our hearts seek layered security. We may trust God, but also need the approval to arrive, the outcome to clarify, the person to respond, the pressure to lift, the plan to work. We call it being responsible, and sometimes it is. But beneath our carefulness there may be a hidden demand that something besides God must hold us before we can be at rest.

David gives his soul a better foundation. “He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.” The strength is not in David’s ability to quiet himself. The strength is in the God who does not shift. A rock does not become steady because someone leans on it well. A fortress does not become safe because the weary enter with perfect composure. God is what his people are not. Firm. Saving. Unthreatened. Able to bear the full weight of those who trust him.

Then David widens the invitation: “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.” Waiting on God alone does not mean keeping the heart closed. Silence before God is not the same as emotional numbness. The same psalm that calls the soul to wait also calls the people to pour out the heart. Faith is not less honest because it is quiet. Prayer is not less reverent because it is full of sorrow, confusion, or need.

This matters for weary believers. Sometimes we think trusting God means presenting a calmer version of ourselves to him. We try to come composed, as though refuge were only for those who have already settled themselves. But David says, “Pour out your heart before him.” Bring the unfiltered ache. Bring the fear you can hardly name. Bring the waiting that has become heavy. God is not made unsafe by what is inside you.

For the Christian, this refuge is not vague comfort. God has made himself known in Jesus Christ, the Son who entered our weakness without sin, bore our judgment on the cross, and rose as the secure salvation of all who belong to him. Our hope is not anchored in the possibility that life may become less uncertain. It is anchored in the crucified and risen Lord, who has reconciled us to God and will not lose those given to him.

So the soul can be spoken to gently. Wait for God. Not because the waiting is painless. Not because every question has been answered. Wait because your salvation rests in One stronger than your heart. Pour yourself out before him, and do not fear that your need will exhaust his mercy. The refuge is not far away. God himself is the refuge of his people.
